چکیده

Background 4D flow CMR analysis of right ventricular (RV) diastolic inflow has demonstrated vortical formations at tips of the tricuspid valve during the deceleration phase of early filling (E wave) (Figure 1). Vorticity can measure the rotation of these vortices and may represent a novel way to assess RV diastolic function. We aimed to determine if right heart vorticity identified right ventricular diastolic dysfunction (RVDD) in pulmonary hypertension (PH) subjects when compared to controls using 4D flow CMR.

4D Flow Assessment of Vorticity in Right Ventricular Diastolic Dysfunction

Diastolic dysfunction, a leading cause of heart failure in the US, is a complex pathology which manifests morphological and hemodynamic changes in the heart and circulatory system. Recent advances in time-resolved phase-contrast cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (4D Flow) have allowed for characterization of blood flow in the right ventricle (RV) and right atrium (RA), including calculation of...

Vorticity is a marker of right ventricular diastolic dysfunction.

Right ventricular diastolic dysfunction (RVDD) is an important prognostic indicator in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). RV vortex rings have been observed in healthy subjects, but their significance in RVDD is unknown. Vorticity, the local spinning motion of an element of fluid, may be a sensitive measure of RV vortex dynamics. Using four-dimensional (4D) flow cardiac magnetic resonance i...

Left ventricular vorticity is marker of ventricular interdependency in pulmonary arterial hypertension

Background Chronic right ventricular (RV) pressure and volume overload in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) results in leftward shift of the interventricular septum and impaired left ventricular (LV) diastolic function. However, the impact of PAH-mediated interdependency on LV fluid mechanics and fluid/structure interactions in LV diastolic dysfunction is incompletely understood. 4D flow CM...

4D flow CMR can detect subtle right ventricular dysfunction in primary left ventricular disease

Background Right ventricular (RV) function holds important prognostic value in both rightand left-sided acquired and congenital heart diseases. However, assessment of RV function remains challenging due to its complex chamber geometry and physiology. 4D flow CMR permits assessment of multidimensional intraventricular flow. We hypothesized that 4D flow specific markers of RV function can detect ...

4D flow CMR detects progressive improvement in ventricular function following cardioversion of atrial fibrillation

Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) causes impairment of cardiac hemodynamics and substantial cardiovascular morbidity. While AF is difficult to assess with cardiac gated CMR, successful electrical cardioversion of chronic AF is often followed by a transient period of atrial stunning where absence of mechanical atrial contraction, similar to that seen in AF, persists despite reinstitution of si...
